Review ordered to make misogyny a hate crime in UK - 'It’s a big step'

September 6, 2018

Following MP Stella Creasy's call to make misogynistic conduct a hate crime in the UK, a review has been granted and may change future legislation.

Ms Creasy announced this during a debate to criminalise upskirt photos in England and Wales.

The Law Commission is set to review how sex and gender are currently classified within hate crime laws to determine whether new offences are needed.

"We have just sent a message to every young woman in this country that we are on their side," said Ms Creasy to the BBC .

"It’s a big step towards calling time on street harassment and to saying misogyny isn’t an inevitable part of life women should put up with or all men commit, but something that damages our society and each of us can make sure is tackled.”

Justice Minister Lucy Frazer said this was a matter of keeping legislation relevant.

"We, as a government, are concerned our hate crime legislation is up to date and consistent."

Ms Frazer further said, although she did not agree the Voyeurism Bill was correct for seeking such legal changes, she sympathised with Ms Creasy, and said ministers would fund the review into "coverage and approach" of hate crime laws.
