Meka Whaitiri appears in Parliament for first time since standing down amid assault allegation

MP Meka Whaitiri has returned to Parliament for the first time since she stood down amid an allegation she assaulted a staff member. 

She was in Parliament today for the third reading of the Wairoa Treaty Settlement.

Ms Whaitiri stood down as Customs Minister last week over what 1 NEWS understands is an allegation of assault on a staff member levelled against her.

"I'm cooperating fully with the investigation. I've got no further comment," she told media. "I am here as the MP for Ikaroa-Rāwhiti."

Ministerial services are undertaking the investigation but there's no date yet on when it will be completed.

Ms Whaitiri stepped down as Customs Minister over an alleged assault on a staff member.
