The boss of Christchurch Men's Prison has been sacked after a long-running investigation into illegal spying on inmates.

John Roper was fired following a security review that found substandard management practices, involving the use of covert listening devices and the failure to act on a number of intelligence reports.

Two other senior managers remain the subject of employment investigations.
