Sydney construction crew celebrates $2.4 million Lotto windfall, except for mate who decided to instead buy a burger

September 6, 2018

"You win some, you lose some, you know."

That's the sage advice from a Sydney construction worker who is doing remarkably well at keeping a smile as his co-workers celebrate a $A2.2 million ($NZ2.4 million) Lotto windfall without him.

Sixteen crew members at Haines Brothers Earthmoving decided to start going in on tickets three weeks ago, each contributing $10, Nine News reports. It has resulted in a pay-out of $137,000 ($NZ149,000) each.

But two co-workers decided not to waste their cash on a pipe dream. One, named Jake, has received a fair bit of ribbing for instead spending his $10 on a burger. But he has managed to keep in spirits high, Nine News reports.

It was actually a close call for the winners, too, revealed David "Hoppa" Young, who was charged with buying the Lotto tickets.

"I went down and fell asleep and forgot to go buy them," he told Nine News.

But he did get to a newsagent on time.

"I saw it had six numbers and started shaking and s*** myself," he said with a laugh.
