Isaiah Papali'i admits he almost cried watching his mum make her first appearance for the Warriors earlier this month.

The 19-year-old was preparing to play the Knights at Mount Smart earlier this month but took some time to watch the curtain-raiser which featured his mum Lorina playing for Warriors women in a exhibition against an Auckland representative side.

The match was the Warriors women's first match since the squad was announced last month and Papali'i admitted it was a special moment for multiple reasons.

"This whole year has been a big step for women's rugby league," he said.

"I watched her run out for her first game and almost shed a tear, it was pretty cool.

"It was a dream come true."

The pair are the first mother-son combo to play in the same club in NRL history.
