Doctor Who actor lands role in next Star Wars film

Sci-fi fans obsessed with both Star Wars and Doctor Who should prepare to have their minds blown when the next installment of the Star Wars saga comes out, according to a casting report released today.

Matt Smith, who played the title role in Doctor Who from 2010 to 2014, has been recruited join the Star Wars universe, Variety reports.

He will star in Episode IX, which is currently slated for release next year.

His exact role – and whether his character will espouse the Force or the Dark Side – hasn’t yet been revealed, the movie industry newspaper reports.

Smith left Doctor Who to take on the role of Prince Philip on The Crown. He has also played 1960s American cult leader and convicted murderer Charles Manson in the yet to be released movie Charlie Says.

Star Wars: Episode IX is set to bring back all existing stars of the series, including Carrie Fisher as Princess Leia despite her death in 2016. 

The 60-year-old died today after being in hospital since suffering a heart attack on Saturday. (Source: Other)

Joining Smith as newcomers to the franchise will be Keri Russell of popular TV show The Americans and Dominic Monaghan, known for his role as Merry in the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

In addition, Billy Dee Williams will be reprising his role as Lando Calrissian for the first time on the big screen since 1983’s Return of the Jedi.
