We often hear these days that standards are slipping when it comes to what we chose to wear in public.

But is wearing pyjama pants to the supermarket a step too far?

Weatherman Matty McLean found himself the subject of intense debate today on TVNZ1 Breakfast over his recent decision, caught on camera, to do just that.

“OK, here’s the thing: they’re very comfy,” Mr McLean said when asked to defend the style choice. “I just thought, ‘I need to get quickly to the shops, I’m in my comfy clothes. Can I be bothered changing?’ The short answer was no.”

His argument drew blank stares from his colleagues.

Hayley Holt admitted to one time putting track pants over her pyjama pants, and Jack Tame said he would wear pyjama pants while taking out the rubbish. But news presenter Daniel Faitaua gave no quarter in his criticism.

“I think it says a lot about your character and your personal integrity,” he said. “Definitely, standards have slipped. Why can’t you find four minutes just to pop on some jeans and a t-shirt?”

It's far from the first time pyjamas have become an issue of debate.

In April, Hawera Cinema in Taranaki earned widespread praise after banning "pyjamas, onesies, dressing gowns or dirty gumboots - no matter how cute they are!"

"Like many other businesses and people in town we have noticed an increasing trend of people thinking pj's/onesies and dressing gowns are appropriate to wear in public," the cinema's manager wrote on Facebook. "It is not the vibe or environment we want to encourage here."
