The Springboks have plummeted to a record equalling low in rugby's world rankings, dropping to seventh after Sunday's 32-19 loss in Argentina.

Under new coach Rassie Erasmus, South Africa had appeared to have turned a corner from last year's disastrous string of results, opening 2018 with a series win over England, as well as a convincing victory in their Rugby Championship opener against Argentina.

However, the latest result saw more of the same problems from 2017 creep back in, out-muscled and outplayed by the Pumas in Mendoza.

To make matters worse, South Africa face a gruelling road trip, preparing to face the Wallabies in Brisbane and the All Blacks in Wellington next month.

The All Blacks keep hold of their spot as the world's best side, while the Wallabies remain fifth but are in danger of being overtaken by Scotland.
