A Westport woman is baking a special type of cookie and getting them ready for market in anticipation of a law change in the near future.
Technically, three-time Coast to Coast champion Emily Miazga's hemp containing Power Cookies are illegal in New Zealand.
"Hemp as a food is naturally high fibre, gluten free, high protein, low in sugar, it has all the essential amino acids, one of the only plants that has all of them.
"It has nothing to do with marijuana, it's the same family of plants but hemp is actually a different variety from the type you smoke and get high from, I call it nature's most powerful superfood," Ms Miazga said.
Westport locals certainly seemed to like them during a taste test with TVNZ1's Seven Sharp, but until the Government turns its frown upside down when it comes to hemp as food, these cookies will be confined to a small office on a back street in Westport.
