Kiwi family desperately raising money to cover $160,000 bill to fly their wife and mum back from Bali in a coma

A New Zealand family is desperately trying to raise $160,000 on a Givealittle page so their mum and wife, who is in a coma in Bali, can fly home.

Hamilton mother-of-two Abby Hartley has been in a coma for more than three weeks after being rushed to hospital with a twisted bowel on August 1 , the first day of her "second honeymoon".

A section of her bowel was removed in emergency surgery but two days later the 41-year-old was put into an induced coma with acute respiratory distress syndrome.

Mrs Hartley has since suffered kidney failure, several infections and a collapsed lung as well as brain damage because of oxygen deprivation.

Her husband Richard and son Toby are still bedside with her but their visas are about to expire and they will need to travel to Singapore in order to renew them.

Insurance was declined because Mrs Hartley's condition was deemed pre-existing.

The family were initially told she could fly back commercially with 9 or 10 seats needed for a doctor, nurse, stretcher and equipment.

However, the 41-year-old now needs to fly back on an emergency aircraft (EVAC), which will cost $160,000.

The family has so far raised almost $130,000 through the  Givealittle  page and plan to re-mortgage the family home.

"The most important thing right now is to get Mum home. This is all very important to us because she deserves to be back home surrounded by her loved ones. We are doing everything we can to raise the funds so we can make this happen," her 20-year-old daughter Sophie Hartley, who returned home to look after the family tiling business, wrote.
