A fuel tanker has tipped over in a crash north of Christchurch, causing traffic misery along State Highway 1 as emergency responders work to right the vehicle.

Authorities expect the crash, in the suburb of Woodend, to keep the highway closed through this afternoon.

A crane is needed to put the truck upright again. But first workers must pump the fuel out of the tanker, according to New Zealand Transport Agency journey manager Lee Wright.

Detours have been put in place around Woodend Beach Road and Sandhill Road, but motorists are urged to take it slow because the alternate routes go through residential neighbourhoods.
