Kiwi pole vaulter Eliza McCartney has lost the race to be fit for the Diamond League finals in Zurich later this week, failing to recover from a heel injury.

McCartney, 21, picked up the injury in Birmingham last week, landing awkwardly after mistiming a jump.

Attempting to clear 4.2m with her second jump of the day when things went awry,McCartney llanded heavily on the track near her take-off point.

She was able to walk away initially but was overcome by the pain and ice was applied to her left foot before she was taken to hospital for scans.

Speaking to Stuff, the Kiwi's manager said that McCartney is aiming to return for the Continental Cup in Ostrava, Czech Republic, on September 8-9.

"She's disappointed but very realistic about it," Scott Newman, told Stuff.

"She's not in a position to be able to jump and she doesn't want to risk competing and potentially aggravating things. Hopefully she'll be back for Ostrava."

McCartney has been in stellar form this season, clearing 4.90m twice, with only two competitors bettering her efforts.
