Police are promising a strong presence in Whanganui for the tangi of the person who was shot last Tuesday.
Inspector Nigel Allan, Whanganui Area Commander, said he expected a number of gang members and associates will be travelling to Whanganui for the tangi of gang member Kevin Ratana.
“We want to reassure the Whanganui community that there will be a strong and visible police presence across the city in the coming days, including additional patrols,” Inspector Allan said.
“We want Whanganui residents to feel reassured by the increased police presence, not alarmed.”
Police say the shooter is still on the loose, but there is no immediate threat to the public. (Source: Other)
“Our staff are appropriately trained and equipped to deal with any situation which may arise and we are committed to ensuring that members of our community feel safe and are safe.”
The police helicopter will also be in the city over the next two days to provide additional support and assistance as required.
A team of investigators is continuing to work to identify those responsible for the death of the young man who will be farewelled today.
Last Wednesday, the body of 27-year-old Ratana was removed from the scene of the shooting in Castlecliffe amid a Mongrel Mob tribute of red bandanas.
