One person has died as the result of a single-car crash in Whakatane overnight.

Emergency services were called to Galatea Road near Lake Matahina around 12.10am, a police spokesperson said.

Police said the occupant of the car died at the scene.

Authorities were initially unable to say if anyone else was in the vehicle, but no other injuries have been reported.
