The Minister of Education says the government is committed to returning to the bargaining table with teachers.

Speaking on TV1'S Q+A last night Chris Hipkins said teachers also needed to commit to the process.

“We would like to get to a point where we reach an agreement that they will recommend to their members rather than having ongoing industrial action. And we're certainly committed to doing that if they are committed to doing that in return,” he said.

He said the current offer that's on the table with primary teachers is more than double anything teachers received under the previous government.

Teachers walked off the job for a day earlier this month, and are threatening more industrial action.
