The Good Home gastro-pub in Birkenhead on the North Shore was robbed about 9.45pm last night by two armed men, police say.
The offenders entered the pub with a firearm and fired shots into the air.
Two patrons tried to intervene but were assaulted and one patron has minor injuries to his head.
An unknown amount of cash was stolen from the pub and the offenders fled in a white Subaru which was later found in Roseberry Avenue in Birkenhead.
A trustee of the bar told 1 NEWS the armed robbery was "soul destroying."
"This is not just about a bar being held up. This is actually about a community being robbed," said Shane Prince.
The bar is owned by the Birkenhead Licensing Trust.
Mr Prince, its deputy chair, said schools, sporting clubs, and counselling services all benefit from the bar.
"We distribute the funds back into the community... that's pretty gut wrenching."
The bar will remain closed for today, but will reopen tomorrow.
"We are resilient and we will come back. It's a great bar to come to with your family and friends, and that's what it's all about.
"We will get back up and running and we will be giving back to the community as we always have."
Between 35-40 people were in the bar when the armed robbery occurred.
"It's not just about a theft, but it's also about the emotional toll on people, I mean being held up at gunpoint is a scary thing and can affect you for the rest of your life," Mr Prince said.
A scene examination is underway and Police are now checking CCTV footage and interviewing witnesses.
No arrests have been made and Police can not confirm what type of firearm was used at this stage.
This is the second time this year the pub has been robbed - a similar scenario happened on Januar 9, when two armed robbers entered the pub carrying weapons, stole cash and fled in a vehicle.
