Former All Blacks captain Reuben Thorne had has own double header in Christchurch today.
The 50 test loose forward turned coach was chasing days of high school glory and provincial success.
First up, at the secondary school grand final, Thorne's Christs College side was put against arch rivals the Christchurch boys.
A dubious late try meant a cruel blow to the head coach and his Christs side who never once trailed in the match.
Boys high won on a try countback after the scores were locked at 18 all.
Extra time would have meant Throne would have most likely missed the first half of Canterbury's match against Wellington across town.
"Yep off to the next one yea its pretty unusual, but its just the way it is today, so we'll keep going," said Thorne.
Down the road in Addington it wasn't much better news for the Canterbury assistant coach. Although given Saturday's traffic he may have missed the first try.
Striking back through golden boy Braydon Ennor and then Hurricane Reed Prinsep to extend the lead.
Co-captains Whetu Douglas and Mitchell Drummond linked up as the defending champions piled on 20 straight points, but then it was Wellington staging a comeback of their own.
Thorne at lease making it one from two for the afternoon, as they grabbed a valuable 27-20 bonus point win to leapfrog from last place to third behind Wellington on the premiership.
