A man is dead and another is in hospital after a crash near Palmerston North early this morning.

Police were called to the scene of the crash near Sanson about 4.05am.

The front seat passenger died in the crash and the driver received moderate injuries and was taken to hospital.

The Serious Crash Unit is now investigating the scene.
