Listen: BBC reporter hit by a falling tree mid-report during Hawaii's storm

August 25, 2018

A BBC reporter got a little too close to the action while reporting the storm on Hawaii's Big Island when a tree fell on him, mid-report.

BBC North America Correspondent James Cook was giving an update on what to expect in the coming hours as Hurricane Lane approaches, when the snapping and falling of a tree is heard in the background.

Cook cries out and there's a moment of silence before he shouts out "I'm alright, I'm alright."

"Well, that was unexpected," he says in a more cheerful tone and he then talks about how he will attempt to climb free.

The audio clip then catches his frustration when he realises his laptop has been damaged.

"Argh- it smashed my laptop."

Twitter users commented on the audio clip that they were "glad he's okay".

Hurricane Lane is currently close to Hawaii, and has weakened somewhat, but not before dumping torrential rain that has inundated Big Island's main city.

People are stocking up on supplies and piling sandbags to shield oceanfront businesses against the surf.
