All Blacks free-wheeling counter-attack 'the area we’ve put no time or detail into' - Barrett sends shiver through world rivals

August 26, 2018

Beauden Barrett has made a startling observation on the All Blacks' Bledisloe success that will send a shiver through their rivals.

While much has been made of the All Blacks' high octane, free-wheeling counter attack that has produced at least half a dozen spectacular tries in the two Bledisloe fixtures in the past fortnight, Barrett last night described it as uncoachable, telling media "it's the area we've put no time or detail into".

"And Fozzy's (assistant coach Ian Foster) keen to keep it that way," the star five-eighth added, after his virtuoso four-try, 30-point display.

"It's one of those ones, because it comes from unstructured, you don't want to structure everything, you just want to let the boys play their natural way for a couple of phases until it slows down (at) the ruck.

"So it's a big focus. The first two rucks off a turnover to have a crack."

The All Blacks scored 40 points last night and had two more tries, both scored off counter-attacks, disallowed.

But Barrett said that wasn't how this side measured success.

"We often talk about being satisfied with performances and it's never reflected by the scoreboard," Barrett said.

"It's about how we play, whether we win by one or win by 20."

The All Blacks now have a week off before taking on Argentina, who beat South Africa in Mendoza this morning, in Nelson in a fortnight.
