The Kiwi helicopter pilot killed while fighting bushfires in southeastern Australia last week has been awarded a posthumous medal.

It was presented by the Rural Fire Service at a memorial in Sydney today.

Allan "Tully" Tull, 57, was flying over the Kingiman fire in New South Wales when the accident happened.

His family was welcomed by a guard of honour and his son was among those who spoke at the memorial.

An investigation is underway to find out how the crash happened.

Allan Tull's funeral will be held in New Zealand next week.
