Glitzy rom-com Crazy Rich Asians has racked up $34 million at the US box office in just five days, with critics hailing it as a 'breakthrough moment" in mainstream entertainment.
It's the first film to star a mostly Asian cast in 23 years since 1993's The Joy Luck Club – an important but daunting milestone for Asian-American visibility in Hollywood.
Adapted from Kevin Kwan's international best-selling novel, the movie follows middle class Asian-American professor Rachel Chu as she jets off to Singapore to meet her boyfriend’s family – and discovers they're not just rich, but crazy rich.
Crazy Rich Asians is out in theatres August 30.
