Māori academic, 60, putting in competitive powerlifting hard yards to promote healthy lifestyle for men his age

At 60 years of age, Dr Rawiri Taonui is a respected academic, writer and researcher. He's also a powerlifter.

Dr Taonui of Ngāpuhi and Ngāti Maniapoto descent, is competing in the National Powerlifting Championships being held in Whangārei.

"One of my goals before this competition was to try and set between six and nine records."

He aims to break national records to advocate for a healthy lifestyle amongst men of his age.

The National Powerlifting Championships run 23-26 August, at Whangārei's Forum North.
