The Government held a Criminal Justice Summit in Porirua this week.

In this edition of Inside Parliament 1 NEWS political reporter Maiki Sherman and 1 NEWS reporter Mei Heron give their thoughts on the summit.

Mei Heron says:

"There seems to be a general recognition our justice system isn't working ... National are going to be questioning whether there will be more criminals on the streets. It’s a really fine line the government has to walk here – looking after victims, still punishing people for the crime but at the same time rehabilitating and looking after people."

Maiki Sherman says:

"In some ways it was quite slick .. it looked good ... and you also had the ministers tackling head on what is a glaring failure of the country – the Māori prison population. So in those ways it was good.

"But in other ways it seemed quite messy" with several attendees at the summit challenging the Government - all of whom had "valid" points.
