It wasn't exactly love at first sight for Warriors women stars Laura and Hilda Mariu.

But a love for rugby league did see their paths cross in 2009 and earlier this year they tied the knot.

Hilda told TVNZ1's Te Karere she wasn't worried about same-sex marriage in any aspect of her life.

"I met Laura and I fell in love with her, gender didn't matter.

"I felt love so that's what I was really intrigued by and I found my soulmate so I wasn't bothered by what people thought ... my kids were happy and my kids could see I was happy.

"Now that we're married, the support from whanau on both sides has been awesome."

"What happens on the field, stays on the field"

How the pair met is a unique love story which featured a different set of colourful vocabulary.

"We actually met on the field," Laura said.

"We were on opposite teams, me and her had a bit of a scuffle on the field. I was on the ground, she gave me a bit of a push and then I got up and didn't say very nice words to [her]."

Hilda said the grudge didn't last long though.

"We believe in, 'what happens on the field, stays on the field,' so after the game we shook each others' hand and started laughing!"

They're not the first female rugby league couple to face off on opposite teams with Karina Brown and Vanessa Foliaki squaring off in this year's women's State of Origin.

The pair were snapped in an embrace after New South Wales beat the Maroons in June - an image the NRL later posted on social media.

There was mostly positive responses on social media to the image but the NRL was quick to shut down people who viewed it negatively.

"Welcome to 2018 … can’t wait for you to join us!" it wrote to a number of negative fans.

"If we can post a photo of Cooper Cronk and his wife Tara kissing, then we can share a photo of Karina Brown and Ness Foliaki sharing a moment too," the NRL replied to another.

Both Hilda and Laura were selected for the Warriors' inaugural women's team earlier this month.
