Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has spoken of the "special" treatment she received while giving birth to baby Neve at Auckland Hospital in June, as she announced a $305m upgrade to the hospital today.
Ms Adern spent a number of days in the central Auckland hospital during and after daughter Neve's birth. Today she lauded its "world class clinicians" and said they deserved a world class facility to work in.
"We have a public health service that New Zealanders can be proud of and as referenced here, I've had some recent experience with that service," Ms Adern said in a press conference this morning.
"That treatment is special. I saw that and I observed it first hand while I was there. Hopefully I'll have the chance to go later on and say thank you today."
She said the $305m investment announced today would allow for an upgrade and repair of essential infrastructure.
"We have world class clinicians in the hospital and in the country...Those staff and the patients they care for deserve modern reliable facilities," she said.
