Amanda Evans has visited the reclusive Christian community three times and says she simply doesn’t see the dark realities the media enjoys repeating.

Kiwis have shown huge interest in six authentic Gloriavale dresses for sale on Trade Me and Facebook.

The dresses were listed on both sites in the past week, and are being sold by former members of the Gloriavale Christian Community who are now living in Timaru, the Timaru Herald reports

Prices ranged from $30 to $140, with nearly 150 people adding a size 10 dress to their watchlist.

Massey University professor Peter Lineham said this fascination with the religious community comes as no surprise, and will definitely increase as more "dramatic stories" of former-members come out.

The community's "traditional uniform," especially the women's dresses, symbolised a contrast to the daily lives of members and the rest of New Zealand, this feeds into the public obsession, he said.
