Green Party MP Julie Anne Genter has announced that she was on the way to Auckland City Hospital to have her baby.

Ms Genter posted a photo on Instagram of her next to her bicycle with the caption, "beautiful Sunday morning for a bike ride to the hospital, for an induction to finally have this baby."

She announced back in February that she and her partner Peter Nunns were expecting a child in August.

"This is it, wish us luck!," she said.

Ms Genter, who is the Minister for Women, chose to cycle to the hospital.

"My partner and I cycled because there wasn't enough room in the car for the support crew."

She said the journey put her "in the best possible mood."
