International visitors to New Zealand spent $11.1 billion in the year to June - up $879 million on the previous period.

The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment said today in a statement that spending from visitors from China and the United States were particularly strong.

Manager of sector trends Mark Gordon said the only country where New Zealand has seen a drop in visitor spending is Japan.

"Overall Japanese visitors are spending less when they are here with average spending per visitor falling 11 per cent," he said.

There has been growth in a number of other emerging Asian markets, including India, Taiwan, the Phillippines and Indonesia increasing.

Visitors are continuing to benefit from good exchange rates when buying New Zealand dollars.

Data was collected from the International Visitor Survey, MBIE said, and includes cash, cards, tour packages and any spending before arriving like booking accommodation online.

Only spending by people over 15 years was included and the data excludes foreign-fee paying students.
