A new moveable mountain hut for alpine adventurers is planned for Aoraki/Mt Cook National Park.

The planned hut is awaiting Department of Conservation (DoC) approval.

The hut, which can be moved in the event of receding glaciers, will replace the original property, which was removed following an avalanche in the 1990s, Stuff reports.

The Beetham Valley alpine hut, which is expected to accommodate four or five people, is a joint project between the NZ Alpine Club and DoC.

NZ Alpine Club general manager Karen Leacock told Stuff: "With climate change becoming more of an issue, and the terrain of the national park changing, such huts are the way to go."

It's expected to cost $80,000, including $40,000 for its installation at the site. Half of the amount has already been raised after receiving donations from Meridian Energy and the Backcountry Trust.

Ms Leacock says the hut could serve as a "midway point" for people visiting the Tasman Glacier, which will be maintained by the NZ Alpine Club following its completion.

DoC, will be in charge of its operation.
