Despite their status as overwhelming favourites for this season's Mitre 10 Cup, defending champions Canterbury are playing down any expectations of going back-to-back.

Ahead of tonight's season opener, Canterbury are the bookies' favourites to retain their Mitre 10 Cup Premiership title, paying just $2.00 to defend their title, with Wellington the next best at $4.50.

However, the team aren't getting ahead of themselves, preparing for their opening clash against Tasman in Blenheim tomorrow night.

Speaking to media at his side's training this morning, co-captain Mitchell Drummond spoke highly of the standard in this season's competition.

"You look at the names of some of the teams across the country, it's going to be a strong competition," he said.

"That's the beauty of this comp - it's a sprint.

"Every team's got to front every week, or you could get spat out."
