Have you ever wondered why Palmerston North has the north tacked on to the end of its name, and should it be dropped so it's just called Palmerston?

TVNZ1's Seven Sharp sent reporter Julian Lee to investigate and he came up with an interesting answer.

Turns out there is already a town called Palmerston in Otago, which was named in 1862, four years before their northerly namesake.

However, is there an argument to change the original Palmerston to Palmerston South seeing as it's much smaller than Palmerston North?
