All Blacks flanker Sam Cane is looking forward to his new role as the side's vice-captain, having been named to do so in next month's series against France.

With Kieran Read ruled out, Sam Whitelock will lead the All Blacks for the three Test series, with Cane and Ben Smith serving as his deputies.

Speaking to media today, Cane said that he was relishing the challenge of taking a more senior role in the All Blacks' leadership group.

"It's certainly a bit of an honour," he said.

"It's not something that you aspire to as a young player growing up, you want to become an All Black absolutely, then the leadership thing's just grown along the way.

"It's something I've come to enjoy for sure, I'm looking forward to what we can do over the next few weeks."
