A Nelson school principal is "a little disappointed" after $650 million in extra funding was announced for the education sector.

Wakefield School Principal Peter Verstappen spoke to 1 NEWS reporter Kaitlin Ruddock after Budget 2018 was read in Parliament today.

"At first glance, I'm a little disappointed in this," Mr Verstappen said.

"We've lost a lot of ground for operational funding in recent years. Our costs are going up, but our funding has not kept track with that.

Of the $2 billion going to education, none of it is going towards salaries. (Source: Other)

"From what I can see, the extra money announced today will amount to something like a 1.6 per cent increase. Now that's barely inflation - doesn't go anywhere near addressing the gap that's growing so not happy about that."
