England coach Eddie Jones has defended the controversial selection of Hurricanes captain Brad Shields, after the Kiwi was picked in England's 34-man squad to tour South Africa next month.

Shields, 27, was finally given clearance to play for England yesterday, having declared his intentions to represent the nation of his parents' birth by signing with English Premiership side Wasps from the end of the current Super Rugby season.

Addressing media as his team was announced, Jones stuck by his decision, when questioned about New Zealand Rugby's objection to Shields' place in his squad.

"My responsibility is to pick England qualified players - I don't decide the regulations," Jones said.

"Brad Shields is a good hard working player who plays for the best team in the Southern Hemisphere.

"He is a considerable influence in that team. A hard working, gritty player and a good back up to Chris Robshaw."

Shields' England debut could come as early as June 9, when the first Test against South Africa in Johannesburg kicks off.
