Spencer, 42, will serve as an assistant coach to Plumtree from next season onwards, joining the Hurricanes from Japan's Sunnix Blues, as current coach Chris Boyd departs for English side Northampton Saints.

Speaking at the Hurricanes' HQ this morning, Spencer spoke highly about the opportunity to join the Wellington Super Rugby side.

"Plums (Plumtree) got in touch with me a few months ago, and asked me if I was interested in coming down to the Hurricanes," Spencer said.

"It was something that I was really keen on.

"The plan was always to come back to New Zealand one day, and I've been given that opportunity and I'm really excited by it."

Spencer also went into detail about what attracted him to the Hurricanes, saying that the chance to work with the club was too good to turn down.

"I believe this franchise, this club is going places."

"They've been very successful in the past, I like the brand of rugby that they're playing.

"They've got some pretty decent stock here that I'm looking forward to getting involved with, and they've got a good coaching group.

"It was an easy decision really."
