Grateful young girl sends heart-warming letter to South Auckland police thanking them, after roadside breath test - and they respond

A young girl sent a heart-warming letter to police thanking them for performing roadside breath testing after her father was hit by a drunk driver.

The girl, whose name is Madison, said in the letter that she and her mum had been stopped by police for a breath test, and while she was scared at first, her mum told her it was done in order to catch drunk drivers.

"I just wanted to thank you for helping everybody because a few weeks ago my Dad was crashed into by a drunk lady ... lucky he was OK!" wrote Madison.

"Thank you for standing out in the cold."

Counties Manukau Police, clearly very appreciative of the message, responded and posted the reply on their Facebook page.

"Thank you very much for your lovely words! We appreciate it very much," the officer, identified only as "Constable", wrote.

They complimented Madison on her handwriting and spelling, and explained that road side breath tests are done to "stop drunk people from driving in order to keep them safe, as well as other people on the road like you and your family".

"Luckily we were not too cold that night, we have merino jumpers like your school jumper that keeps us warm plus jackets too! I like to wear really fluffy, fuzzy socks with my boots just in case," the officer wrote.

"We will always go into the cold if it means we have to keep people safe! Plus, we get to meet lovely people like yourself and your family which makes it really fun!"

The post was well received online, with numerous commenters chiming in to offer their thanks to police for their service.
