Jacinda Ardern has become the first to take up a challenge for leaders in the country to learn and sign a brief message to show their support for New Zealand Sign Language Week this week.
To kick off the week, Deaf Aotearoa has challenged leaders in New Zealand who don't know New Zealand Sign Language to learn and sign a brief message to show their support for NZSL Week.
"Hello, my name is Jacinda," the Prime Minister signs in a video recorded at her office desk and posted on the Deaf Aotearoa Facebook page.
"I'm the Prime Minister of New Zealand Aotearoa. Deaf Aotearoa is organising NZSL week, which the Government supports," she continues in sign language.
"Happy NZSL week!" she signs, to conclude her message.
Deaf Aotearoa says it's "super proud" that New Zealand's leader was the first to take up its Leaders Challenge.
"Thank you Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern for your support!" the organisation wrote.
Deaf Aotearoa added that if you're a leader and interested in participating in the challenge, email nzslweek@deaf.org.nz for details.
