The Hurricanes are on high alert for the return of Sonny Bill Williams when they face the Blues at Eden Park on Friday, loose forward Gareth Evans says.

Williams, 32, hasn't played for the Blues since a fractured wrist suffered against the Stormers in March.

Speaking at Hurricanes training, Evans outlined the challenge of Williams' return.

"People are saying that Sonny's back this week, so he's going to add another dimension to their backline," Evans said.

Evans also spoke about the nature of the Blues' season, with the Aucklanders struggling to find their form on a number of occasions.

"They're a difficult team to prepare for."

"It's sort of expect the unexpected - you don't know who's going to turn up.

"If they put their best team out, they've got a lot of All Blacks, and they can be deadly players."
