Police have praised members of the public who went to the assistance of a man on fire in a Dunedin church carpark this morning, describing their actions as incredibly courageous.
The man died at the scene despite rescue efforts by members of the public.
Emergency services were called at 10.47am to Nations Church carpark on King Edward Street where the man was located on fire. A service was taking place inside.
Detective Senior Sergeant Rob Hanna says police enquiries have established the death is not suspicious and it will be referred to the coroner.
Formal identification processes are underway and police are working to notify next of kin, Mr Hanna said in a statement this afternoon.
"We are extremely grateful to the members of the public who went to the man’s assistance and who managed to put the fire out," he said.
"The actions of these people were incredibly courageous."
Police will ensure support is offered to those who helped or witnessed the incident, Mr Hanna said.
