Thunder, rain and wind possible in Auckland, Northland this weekend as low pressure system moves in

April 27, 2018

MetService has issued heavy rain warnings and watches for this weekend, with Auckland and Northland in the firing line for wind, rain and possibly thunderstorms.

Full warnings are now in place for the areas of Coromandel the Bay of Plenty, and the heaviest rain is forecast in those regions for Saturday afternoon.

Rainfall rates could reach 20mm per hour and total accumulation 100-120mm.

Heavy rain is also forecast to hit Auckland, Northland, the ranges of Westland, Dunedin and North Otago.

Strong winds are likely in Northland and Auckland from Saturday morning.

In terms of thunderstorms, MetService says there's a low risk that Northland could see a few throughout Saturday, while the risk increases to include the Auckland and Coromandel area by the afternoon.

The poor weather is caused by an unstable low pressure system moving on the the country off the north Tasman Sea, and MetService says it has been particularly difficult to forecast.
