Terrifying holdup of Whangarei bank sees gun pointed at customer's back, waved at staff

April 26, 2018

Police hope newly-released security video will spur information to help catch two robbers who held up the ANZ Bank in Whangarei last month.

Footage of the suspects was shown for the first time on tonight's episode of Police Ten 7 following the incident on March 22.

Two heavily-disguised males, one carrying a firearm, entered the bank just after 11.30am and demanded cash from staff at the scene before fleeing on foot.

The pair were caught on camera in the bank and immediately after the incident as they fled the scene.

Acting Detective Senior Sergeant Rob Huys says a dedicated team is continuing to make enquiries in relation to the incident.

"We are determined to find those involved in this incident, which was frightening for staff and customers in the bank at the time, and hold them to account," he said.

"We are hoping that members of the public may recognise the two suspects in this footage and we encourage anyone with even the slightest amount of information about this incident to contact police."
