With yesterday's announcement of the All Blacks-Black Ferns double header against Australia later this year, women's rugby is no longer the curtain raiser, says Kiwi star Portia Woodman.

In August, the Black Ferns and Australia will compete for the Laurie O'Reilly Memorial Trophy on the same night the All Blacks take on Australia in their bid for the Bledisloe Cup for the first time.

Speaking to 1 NEWS as the Black Ferns Sevens returned home from their victories at the Japan Sevens and their Commonwealth Games gold medal triumph, Woodman spoke of her team's pride at yesterday's announcement.

"We're no longer curtain raisers, we are the main event," she said.

"That's exciting. The mindset, the language is all changing around women's rugby.

"It's [an] exciting time because there's not only just the Australian Test matches, but a lot more further along in the year."
