Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has laid a wreath during the dawn ceremony in Auckland on her first ever Anzac Day as PM.

Ms Ardern, speaking this morning to TVNZ1's Breakfast programme, said there was "something quite humbling and special" about being asked to perform the task.

She also said the day has taken on a special significance for her now that her grandfather, who served in World War II, passed away.

"We are increasingly having to share the stories of those who served rather than young people having that direct access," Ms Ardern said.

She paid tribute to New Zealand's military personal who continue to serve New Zealand, and said she remains committed to "doing our bit globally too".

"We have a role to play in making sure that we continue, as New Zealand has always done, to stand up for international rules," Ms Ardern said.

"Being defenders of peace and security but always taking our own view based on our values and our experience."

Ms Ardern said she was heartened to see many young people at this morning's ceremony, and she hopes young people continue to take part.
