Driver asleep at the wheel lucky to escape serious injury as 4WD ploughs into roadside trees

April 23, 2018

A teenage driver in Australia who fell asleep at the wheel was lucky to escape serious injury when his vehicle crashed into trees.

The rear dash camera of a nurse driving home from work, in front of the 19-year-old, captured the horrifying incident southeast of Brisbane yesterday afternoon.

The footage, posted on the Facebook page of Dash Cam Owners Australia, shows the 4WD driver veer onto the shoulder of the road and into a tree-covered embankment.

In the post, the husband of the nurse says the driver fell asleep at the wheel.

"Beenleigh-Redland Bat Road, Cornubia. Fell asleep at the wheel, wife is a emergency nurse and checked him out straight away," he wrote.

The man told Yahoo7 News his wife saw the car disappear into the bushland and rushed to his aid.

"He'd been up all night and then went fishing for the day," he said.

"It could have been so much worse … he was running on adrenaline but didn't appear too injured."

A spokesperson for Queensland Ambulance said they assessed the driver and he didn't appear to be injured and didn't require treatment or transport.
