Peter Burling named Team New Zealand's skipper for 2021 America's Cup campaign

April 19, 2018

Peter Burling has been named as the skipper for Team New Zealand for the 2021 America’s Cup in Auckland.

The Kiwi syndicate’s Ray Davies confirmed the announcement during a Facebook question and answer session.

"We have (signed him). He is going to be skipper," said Davies.

"We're looking forward to rebuilding from what we had in Bermuda and obviously we've got to take it to another level again, and we're very excited about the sailing team we have."

Australian Glenn Ashby skippered Team New Zealand to victory last year in Bermuda and said in February he was still interested in sailing for the Kiwi syndicate in 2021.

Davies said Team New Zealand have signed more than half of their crew from their successful 2017 America's Cup campaign for 2021.

"It's a long way away until we're sailing these boats, and we're not in a position to hire a full sailing squad at this stage.

"We've got a few key guys that are helping with the design and then well build on that as it comes closer to the time."

Burling is sailing currently for Team Brunel in the Volvo Ocean Race.
