Kiwi pole vault star Eliza McCartney was her usual, smiley self as the New Zealand Commonwealth Games team returned home from the Gold Coast last night.

McCartney, 21, bought home a silver medal from the Gold Coast, just one of New Zealand's record haul from an overseas games.

Speaking to 1 NEWS, McCartney opened up about coming to terms with her achievement.

"It's just incredible bringing home a medal, every single time," she said.

"I've only had two competitions like this, but it's never not special.

"Even though I was not that happy with the height that I jumped, in time I think I will be happy because it was the first time at the Commonwealth Games, but I'll never not be happy with the fact that I'm bringing home a medal."
