National announces candidate in Northcote by-election

April 15, 2018

Dan Bidois has been selected to run as National's candidate in the Northcote by-election.

The Northcote seat, located on Auckland's North Shore, was vacated by former Health Minister Jonathan Coleman who held it since 2005.

Mr Bidois is currently Strategy Manager for Foodstuffs and has worked as a strategist and economist in New Zealand, the US and Malaysia.

He was raised in Auckland, leaving school at 15 to complete a butchery apprenticeship with Woolworth's New Zealand.

He then went on to study at the University of Auckland, and attended Harvard University on a Fulbright Scholarship.

"It's a true honour to be selected as National’s candidate in Northcote," Mr Bidois said in a statement.

"The hard-working people of Northcote are not a Piggy Bank for Phil Goff, Jacinda Ardern and Winston Peters to raid to pay for pet projects on the other side of the Bridge that won’t benefit us here.

"I'm asking for your support because you deserve better, and I want to be part of a National team in Wellington that will stand up to those in power to address the issues facing Northcote."

Mr Bidois was selected as the National candidate by local party members.

Jonathan Coleman won the seat with a 6200 majority in last year's election.

"Although National has held the seat since 2005, and won the party vote consistently since then too, we never take any election for granted and will be campaigning hard," National party president Peter Goodfellow said.

Labour has a shortlist of three, including both their candidates from the last two general elections, the New Zealand Herald reports.

For Labour Richard Hills, a candidate in 2014 and now an Auckland councillor, is up against Shanan Halbert, the candidate in 2017. The third Labour hopeful is Paul McGreal.
