History-making boxer David Nyika says the support from home struck him "right in the heart" as he claimed gold in the men's 91kg division on the Gold Coast today.

Nyika, 22, backed up 81kg gold from Glasgow with another success, comprehensively outboxing Australia's Jason Whateley today.

Nyika had a large support crew with him, who were in full voice during the fight, chanting and singing the classic Kiwi tune Tutira Mai as their man went for glory.

Speaking to 1 NEWS' Tamati Rimene-Sproat after the judges ruled in his favour, he said the support spurred him on.

"The Aussie's have their 'Aussie, Aussie, Aussie', we have our 'Tutira Mai', that was really cool to hear the cheering crowd, it struck me right in the heart."

Nyika said he was looking forward to celebrating with friends and family, and having a holiday with his girlfriend.

After missing the Rio Olympics, he said he was still in no rush to turn pro, saying his body and mind needed a rest.

"There is no rush to turn professional, the money's not going anywhere, I'm comfortable, I've got supportive friends and family, sponsors, I've got an incredible network of supporters."
