New Zealand's women's Black Sticks historic 4-1 win over their trans-Tasman rivals in this afternoon's Commonwealth Games gold medal final wasn't without some tears of joy.
New Zealand had only made the Commonwealth final once in the women's draw, losing agonisingly to Australia on penalty strokes in Delhi in 2010, then four year's ago at Glasgow they won bronze.
Watched on by Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern the Kiwis' 20 year wait for hockey gold ended.
"It's still so surreal, I’ve never really been on the top, so it’s going to be a really special moment," a teary-eyed Anita McLaren told 1 NEWS after the win.
"We've worked really hard... To do it for New Zealand is amazing.
"I'm really proud of the girls and just amazing to bring home the gold finally."
